About

Nigel French

Hello!

I’m a photographer, graphic designer, and design teacher, based in the beautiful and historic town of Lewes, in the south of England.

The images presented here are my humble attempt to celebrate beauty, big and small. Photography helps me to be more observant, to find joy in my surroundings, and to present a different view of those things we sometimes overlook. To paraphrase the great street photographer Garry Winogrand, “I photograph to see what things look like photographed.” And because it’s a journey, I photograph to get better at making photographs.

I work in several styles…

Fine Art Photography
Landscapes near and far captured with a painterly quality in colour and black and white. The monochrome images are shot with an infrared converted camera to heighten their drama and contrast.

Typographic Posters
Nostalgic and humourous subjects with music or pop culture references. As a graphic designer I work closely with (and write about) type and I have a love of letterforms and wordplay.

Digital Screenprints
Based on original photographs, these images of vintage roadside signage and iconic architecture are distilled into a simplified palette of bold colour and printed in limited editions of between 10 and 100.

So that I can ensure the highest quality product, I do all my own printing.

Thanks for taking the time to view my work—and please subscribe to my “newsletter” so that I can keep you informed of new work.
